Feng Shui (pronounced fung shway) is the ancient Chinese art of placement. Literally translated, it means “wind and water”. Practitioners of Feng Shui believe that by understanding the basic principles of how energy, or chi moves through the universe, you can design and arrange living and working environments to help reach goals. The root of Feng Shui can be traced back thousands of years to farmers in rural China who very survival depended on choosing between land with stagnant or bad chi. The position of the land, location or rivers and the direction of prevailing winds were among the elements analyzed to determine a favourable site for crops. Today, the principles of Feng Shui are applied to home décor to create a harmonious dwelling. The goal is to design living spaces that harness and encourage the flow of good energy. It is believed that people who live and work in such an environment feel more energetic, creative and balanced, thereby increasing their chances for both happiness and success. If the idea of researching 4000 years of Feng Shui history is daunting, but you want to take at least part of the journey most design experts of Feng Shui would offer you the following tips to apply to your home. Get rid of clutter because disarray is thought to cause confusion and block chi. Live plants and flowers create positive energy and should be used in family rooms and dining areas. Mirrors are considered the “aspirin of Feng Shui” because they activate positive chi and redirect negative energy. Hanging crystals in the southwest room to create harmony with the home. A crystal chandelier in the foyer attracts positive energy, a small mirror hung over the outside redirects negative energy. Wind chimes help suppress bad luck enhancing energies in corners of the home. Water features, such as fish bowls, fountains or painting of a water scene, stimulate positive energy and are thought to attract wealth and prosperity.
